How to tie the Grasshopper (Terrestrial)
Hook: Tiemco TMC 5212 2XL, sizes 8-12
Thread: Uni 6/0 Tan or Yellow
Materials
- Hook: Tiemco TMC 5212, #8-12
- Thread: Uni 6/0 Tan
- Tail: Short red yarn or elk hair
- Body: Tan or yellow deer body hair (spun and trimmed) or foam
- Rib: Brown thread counter-wound
- Wing: Oak mottled turkey quill or tan elk hair
- Legs: Knotted pheasant tail fibers or rubber legs (yellow)
- Head: Deer hair (spun and trimmed)
Tying steps
- Mount 2XL hook. Tie in a short red yarn tail.
- Spin a large clump of tan deer hair at the bend; pack tight.
- Continue spinning and packing deer hair along 2/3 of the shank for the body.
- Trim body to a flat bottom, rounded top, roughly cylindrical hopper shape.
- Tie in mottled turkey wing quill flat over the body, extending to hook bend.
- Tie in knotted pheasant tail or yellow rubber legs on each side.
- Spin deer hair for a large head, trim to shape.
- Whip finish, apply head cement to thread.
